Magruder Building - Mechanicsburg, Ohio






Magruder Building in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Built in 1881 by Percy Moore. Originally housed Magruder's Harness Shop in the back half of the building and in front was Moore's Dry Goods. Insurance agencies were located on the second floor. William Saxbe, later in the 1950s located his law offices in this building. Saxbe was a former Ohio Attorney General 1958-1968, 1968-1974 he was a U.S. Senator. Saxbe served as U.S. Attorney General for the first few months of the President Ford Administration, before resigning in early 1975, when he was appointed United States Ambassador to India. He served in that capacity until 1977. After that, Saxbe returned to Mechanicsburg and resumed the practice of law. Architectural Style-High Victorian Italianate.  Extra notes: 1.) William Saxbe was in the Ohio National Guard, and was on active duty during the Korean War, from 1951 to 1952. He was discharged from the reserve with the rank of colonel during 1963. 2.) During his tenure as Ohio Attorney General, he argued the murder case of Doctor Sam Sheppard before the United States Supreme Court during 1966, against Sheppard's attorney, F. Lee Bailey.
